Google has finally allowed the addition of a little bling to their search page, but you're not going to see it unless you're logged in. When you're logged in to your Google account you should now find a link in the bottom left hand corner that allows you to choose a background image for the search page.
You can choose from a variety of images from different sources to use as a background image on the Google search page. You can choose a background image from your pictures on your computer and it'll be uploaded to your Picassa drop box. You can use existing images from your Picassa web photos gallery, a public gallery and from some Editor's Picks.
It's not really an original idea, Microsoft's Bing has had this feature from day one but without the option of changing images to the extent that Google allows. With Microsoft's Bing you can go back a few days worth of daily changing images but the maximum amount of pictures available to you at any time is just eight.
While I like the new feature, I don't like the fact that you have to be logged into Google to use it. There should be some default images, like the Editor's Picks that everybody has access to without logging in.
I'm probably not going to use this new feature all that much but it's nice to see that Google has finally added some bling, or maybe some Bing, to their search engine.
Google might be the king in search features but I have to give this one to Bing. The implementation and selection of the background images is much better in my opinion. I can understand that they might want to save on bandwidth though :)
I haven't noticed this feature previously. My guess is it might either be a testing phase or they are using the account info to store the information you have selected (could use a cookie). Regardless, I'm a bit disappointed with the feature or perhaps with the pictures since on some of them you can't even read the actual information.
It's a new feature! Cool but... well... useless. ;)
